Cases in Integrative Medicine

The following cases are examples of people who have been helped through the use of medical biochemistry, which tests for the underlying biochemical causes of disease, or other integrative methods such as bioidentical hormone replacment, lifestyle modificaitons and nutritional medicine. Since biochemistry is a web of interactions, conditions will have many different symptoms, such as someone complaining of arthritis, fatigue and depression. In writing up these cases, it was sometimes difficult to decide under which category to put a case. Every effort was made to categorize cases based on the main presenting symptom.

Most people suffering from these conditions and symptoms already had medical diagnoses, such as depression or mature onset asthma, which is the way conventional medical doctors describe shortness of breath upon physical exertion in adults. However, that diagnosis, like most medical diagnoses, does not provide any information about the underlying causes of the symptoms.

Biochemical testing generates a large amount of data that allows skilled interpreters to provide functional diagnoses. A functional diagnosis is a description of the underlying biochemical causes of symptoms and diseases. With this information customized plans are created to help restore biochemical balance, alleviate symptoms and correct the underlying causes of disease. This approach is most useful when a biochemical causes of disease is suspected. When the causes are purely structural in nature, such as ligament laxity causing low back pain or a tendinitis causing elbow or shoulder pain, then Prolotherapy would be indicated instead. When the cause appears strictly hormonal such as with menopausal symptoms, bioidentical hormone replacement may be recommended.
